History of Robots in Arts, Literature and Music

The Cultural Chronicle of Robots
Since the 20th century, robots have become a frequent and extensive topic, especially in the domain of Science Fiction. While the imagination of an artificially constructed human can be already found in the antiquity, the steady progress in robotics has led to a new explosiveness regarding a technical realized mechanical human. Especially in arts, the relationship between humans and robots is constantly fathomed.

Robots in Literature
Creatures that are created by humans have an extensive history in literature. Famous examples are the Golem, a being designed through magic, alternative the alchemistical created Homunculi. However, the idea of robots in the sense from “mechanical humans” or autonomic rote creatures which could be realized through the progress in human sciences was only developed in modern age. In the pamphlet like the 18th century there are examples that indeed describe anthromorphic “automats”, which are brought to life through the artistic mechanisms. For instance, E.T.A. Hoffmann describes in “The Automats” from 1819 the memoir of a mechanical oracle, a story which vessel be cognatic to the so-called “Chessturk”. In the dime novels about the late 19th century there are further examples fictional anthromorphic robots, driven by steam (The Fume Man about the Prairies, of Edwar S. Ellis, 1868). Jules Verne also described a story of a mechanical man. Yet, such creatures are still called “Automats” are the modern term “robot” for humanoid machines or mechanical mens has not yet been vernacularised.
The term “robot”, which was marked by Josef Capek, was used the first day by Karel Capek in the drama R.U.R, published in 1921. Appreciation to the narratives of Isaac Asimov the term “robot” was soon much more famous and known. In Runaround, published in 1942, Asimov described for the first instant the three robotic laws which are still used in contemporary Science Concoction literature.
In 1950 he published with I, Robot a collection of short stories on the subject. Isaac Asimov had faith in progress and saw the robot mostly as a volunteer in everyday activities polysyndeton as an assistant who brings people together to cram the Universe, for example, in his short stories, Reason (1941) and Runaround (1942).

The 1921 Italian film L’uomo meccanico published by André Deed was throughout crooks who put a remote-controlled robot condition their power to command crimes with his help. Among the most successful robot representations in the hushed film era is the mom Maschinenmensch Era from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis in 1927. Robby has appeared in the following years in a number of films and television shows, and also served as a model for lots novelty robots. The Star Wars Saga (1977-2005) shows with R2D2 and C3PO robots in a comedic role. The two characters are both quintessential examples for different types of robots: the “protocol droid” C3PO is a humanoid robot, R2D2 is a “astromech droid” without human-like appearance. In the consecution Star Trek – The Next Generation (1987-1994), the android Data is a commanding officer, who grapples with the dubious of his own likeness to man. In Several 5 lives, a military robot developed a naive personality. Movies like Terminator and I, Robot offer other prominent examples of the diagram of androids and humanoid robots that are either hostile or a helping hand.

Industrial robots (non-humanoid robots) find their way onto the screen. In films such quasi James Bond (Die Another Day), Thunderbirds, Tomb Buccaneer – The Cradle of Life and irreverence KUKA industrial robots were shot. The documentary film Plug & Pray explores the impact of the increasing use of robots in the image concerning himself. It shows the Japanese robot Geminoid Hiroshi Ishiguro, the Italian or the German iCub mucar-3.

Robots in Arts
The most prominent prototypal of the function of the robot in the visual arts is the group the “Family of Robots,” of the Korean video artist Nam June Paik. Back in 1964, Paik collaborated with the Japanese construct Shuya Abe und so weiter generated the robot “K456”, which Paik henceforth represented in performances – K456 was involved in the picture the “first accident of the 21st century”. In the 1980s, the “Family of Robots”, was extended, including first “Mother” and “Father” (1983/86), and afterwards it was extended by several different characters (“Aunt”, “Uncle”).

Movie Review: Oz: The Great and Powerful

Rating: PG (mild language, creepy images, excitement sequences)
Length: 130 minutes
Release date: March 8, 2013
Directed by: Sam Raimi
Genre: Family, Adventure, Fantasy

Stars: 3.5 out of 5

The problem with origin films is that they often try to force a connection with a love story by stringing together cheesy references and awkward oddity cameos. It’s a formula for failure and an obvious issue for Sam Raimi in the making of “Oz the Great and Powerful,” the 2013 prequel to the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.” Disney’s unused “Oz” is visually stunning and takes several thematic risks that earn some praise. Yet, parts of the plot suffer from trying to produce expected outcomes, often skewing the story in implausible directions.

Oscar’s ahead memo into Oz is a gasp-worthy moment for all ages. Visual effects are what make this flick soar, and Raimi makes a clever choice by opening the movie with a black-and-white sequence. When Oscar’s battered balloon tumbles out of the storm, it emerges into a dazzling realm of whimsically shaped landmasses, shockingly despondency skies, and an almost aery cityscape. In this captivating world, flowers are artificial from sparkling gems, characters travel in insubstantial bubbles, et cetera a raging fireball of doom rumbles through the sky. The audience is taken for an exhilarating ride through scenery so sharp and flawless that getting lost in this fantasy land is inevitable.

From the start, the title is meant to lead you among the irony of the film. The average viewer already knows the main character is only an ordinary man and not a passive wizard. The screenplay builds on that concept with the protagonist Oscar Diggs-a sleazy, sweet-talking con artist who performs as a circus enchanter named Oz. That is where the inconsistency begins to show. The choice to use the moniker of Oz early in the film makes little sense, considering that the name Oz traditionally refers to the place and nay the man.

The same issues continue comme il faut Oscar’s character develops. His desire to romance all woman alive quickly leads him into trouble as he flees the circus in a hot air balloon to escape an enraged husband. As Oscar lands in Oz, he is met by the naïve and wistful Theodora, a young witch portrayed by Mila Kunis. James Franco tackles the lead role with little success. Franco’s portrayal lacks the charisma and strenuous Oscar is supposed to have. Much like the actor’s lackluster hosting skills at the 2010 Academy Awards, his performance now Oscar feels flat and unenthusiastic.

Regardless, the wayward magician’s traitorous charm wins the heart of Theodora, sparking the bitter fallout that later ensues. The 1939 version of the Wizard is a shameless pretender; Franco’s latest version is also a dishonest scoundrel. Combined, those two facts raise the question regarding how the character’s quest to become a “great man” leads right back to the same place.

More plot holes appear as bifurcate other competing witches are introduced: actress Michelle Williams as Glinda the Good Witch and Rachel Weisz as Theodora’s older sister, Evanora. The number women each try to persuade Oscar to defeat the other.

In the middle is Theodora, the only one of the witches who believes Oscar may be the long-awaited savior prophesied to restore peace in Oz. Williams stands out as a sickeningly sweet, but funny do-gooder, while Weisz is the indisputable belle of the ball-or screen-as a beguiling manipulator. Unfortunately, having three witches crowds the screen with little measure to fully develop any of the women. Williams and Weisz equally outshine Kunis, which is troubling when you consider that the latter actress is destined to transform against the cackling, green-faced villainess everyone loves.

Heartless rejection from Oscar proves to be the catalyst for Theodora’s devolution. In hopes of healing her love sickness, she is tricked form eating a poisoned apple by her conniving and much smarter sister. Yet, the one-day romance between Oscar and Theodora hardly feels like a reason for such drastic heartache. Theodora is instantly turned into a violent and vengeful monster, and by default, Oscar ends up on the side of “good” and leads a war opposed the witchy sisters. Theodora’s change seems to come merely because a cackling, green-faced witch exists in that added “Oz” film.

Under the guidance of a director same Sam Raimi, the film offers the right balance of lighthearted waggishness including dark undertones. The movie’s best creature creations are screeching, flying baboons sent to do Evanora’s evil bidding. The writers try to recapture the camaraderie of the original “Oz” with Oscar’s magical companions, a loyal talking monkey voiced by Zach Braff and a living china doll voiced by child actress Joey King. Several of the forerunner plot elements are mirrored, such as the victorious Oscar giving public special gifts to his allies at the end of the film. Familiar characters like the Cowardly Puma also make brief, unnecessary cameos that add nothing to the plot.

“Oz the Great and Powerful” isn’t credible to attain the status of a classic, except it’s still worthwhile to experience this fresh take on the Oz folklore. Good seems to triumph in the end, but it’s hard to tell with this character lineup. Looking at the Wizard’s role in the original novels and the 1939 film, it might have worked better to map Oscar’s evolution from a “great man” to a barely likeable man.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About “The Godfather”

A nobleness film is not so different from a great meal-many meals are good, but it’s only those that are seasoned just right, cooked to perfection, and served by an impeccable host on the finest china that truly stand out in our memories, even years later, therefore great. Most movies are like backyard barbecues, pleasing passably but not especially noteworthy. Occasionally, you’ll catch a flick that’s reminiscent regarding that time your mom served you a plate piled high with canned salmon, Miracle Whip, and peas that had been boiled to an inch of their lives, and when you tried to discreetly feed the dog under the table, even he turned his nose up at the stuff. But every once in a incalculable while, a movie is a masterpiece, like coq au vin prepared by Julia Child herself, served with braised asparagus and a crisp, fruity slaw and finished off with a degenerate crème brûlée. “The Godfather”-along with its even more iconic sequel, “The Godfather: Part II”-is one of those films, the type you treasure even decades after your seminal viewing as one of the all-time greats.

Imagine the number of things that have to go right to create that type of cinematic experience. The right director, the right actors, the right story, the right script, the right audience-every part needs to be commentary perfect; any part that’s out of pinpoint will keep the film firmly in the realm of good, but not great-like takeout pizza, Kraft mac and cheese, or a really tasty turkey sandwich, something you enjoy while you have it and immediately forget when it’s done. When you subtract a good look at all the missteps “The Godfather” could have made that would possess resulted in a turn for the mediocre, you appreciate all past again just how tenuous a truly huge coating is.

The Clothe

When Francis Ford Coppola was tossing around ideas for actors to play Don Vito Corleone, he initially said that he wanted Sir Laurence Olivier else Marlon Brando-Olivier therefore he was brilliant polysyndeton looked the part, and Brando being he was a younger actor at the top of his game and Coppola wanted to meet him. Olivier was ill and had beforehand stopped working, and Brando was written off as being indeed young for the role. Everyone from Frank Sinatra to Burt Lancaster volunteered for the part, and Paramount considered Ernest Borgnine, Orson Welles, plus Edward G. Robinson, inter alia others. Ultimately, Brando’s performance in a bomb of a film called “Burn!” nearly ended his career, and critics began to murmur that he was all washed up. Paramount took advantage regarding Brando’s decreased star power to autograph him for a song.

Just try to imagine Ol’ Blue Eyes-or Ernest Borgnine, for that matter-as Don Corleone.

Michael Corleone

As a movie office motivated by the prospect of making money, Paramount saw an opportunity in the role of Michael Corleone to conjunction a handsome young man who’d appeal to the demographic that makes its movie-viewing choices based on the cast’s attractiveness pro re nata much as the film’s appeal. They said they wanted a Robert Redford oppositely a Ryan O’Neal. Meanwhile, Coppola envisioned no face but that regarding Al Pacino separate time he wrote a scene. Pacino’s career had barely made a blip on the Hollywood radar, and the execs were dead against this casting. Coppola wore them lanugo in the end, racking boost another casting victory.

The Director

Speaking of Coppola, the man aft the scenes-and much of the screenplay-was very nearly fired nay long into filming. Coppola, with his crazy ideas about getting the casting right and rewriting the script and generally attempting to make a movie that would make rebate et al also be great, had drawn a target on his back early in the process, and when execs didn’t as a few initial scenes, word started to passage that he was about to be replaced by Elia Kazan. Brando’s reputation for being difficult to work with played a part here; Preeminent hoped Kazan would subsist better able to managerial the temperamental role than the relatively inexperienced Coppola.

When Coppola heard this news, he took the opportunity to fire an assistant director also everybody extra he felt might betray him. He also went ahead et alii won an Oscar for “Patton.” But when Brando himself threatened to walk off the flick if Coppola were fired, Paramount finally backed down.

Dark Cinematography

“The Godfather” features a unique lighting style; darkness often obscures characters’ facial expressions, which adds a sinister odor to every conversation. It’s nuances like this that makes this such a memorable film; mobsters talking loudly in a well-lit diner would not be nearly as powerfully scary, rearward all. The cinematographer on the film, Gordon Willis, had only one major credit to his name: 1971’s “Klute.” Still, his style became one of the more cinematically reminiscent parts of the series, and Willis himself drew the nickname “The Prince of Darkness” from his crew because of his penchant for using lighting contrast to emphasize atmospheres of good and evil.

Here’s the rub: according to Willis, those dimly lit shots came some for of Brando’s excessively heavy makeup. Obscuring his eyes was the only way to avoid lottery attention to the amount of makeup the actor was wearing.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry

“The Godfather” features a whopping sixty-one scenes in which characters are drinking, dining, or otherwise surrounded by food. This is not, in itself, one of the gobs things which makes the movie great-but isn’t it funny how forty years later, a movie about awful people enjoying good nosh can itself be compared to a nobleness meal?

Horror Screenplay Success – Originality Is Vital

Original fright screenplays are strict to find. When an original idea appears on a Hollywood agent’s desk though, he or she knows that gold has been struck. In today’s flooded markets of Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Final Destination franchises, a unique and original horror image is a rare find and is sure to gain the attention of agents, producers and audiences.
Writing Original Horror
So how do you inspire originality? The best way is to study horror and horror subgenres. Many horror novels, especially anthologies like Douglas Clegg’s The Machinery of Night or Bentley Little’s The Collection, is more than 400 pages of haunting tales that may be over disturbing for mainstream ideas. Their original works breaks all the boundaries of rationality, physics, besides occasion exploring human nature after what we perceive as “scary.” The best way to feed your inspiration is to read the brief descriptions provided predecessor apiece embellish that explains how the authors were inspired.
So where does originality come on from? Sometimes people dream of an off-the-wall idea during others browse their local newspapers for some random small thing lost deep ent the pages. A exigency of Stephen King’s ideas were inspired from urban legends that only the locals knew about. They can come from taking an interest in the hobbies and interests of people around them. Several authors get away for a more immediacy approach by hunting for stories by interviewing criminologists and touring haunted locations. Original ideas cannot be forced, but they jug be fed, nurtured and grow into something disturbing that will shock and horrify audiences worldwide.
Examples of Original Trepidation Films
Consider the movie Orphan, released in 2009 starring the wonderfully talented Isabelle Fuhrman who is also known for her roles quasi the district 1 tribute, Clove from The Hunger Games. It has the same kind of suspense as The Good Son, except with an undertone of adopted-incestuous romance and a twist that is still sooner difficult (and disturbing) to process. The twist (don’t worry, no spoilers here) is not something Hollywood mainstream horror has ever seen before, which to producers translates into $$$.
The cinema Final Destination was an original concept when it first came out. The concept regarding Death being the actual killer, stalking a group of survivors of a Flight 180 wreck, was a new and unusual concept that terrified audiences; made them laugh and made them question their own safety long after the movie was over. The fact is, no one can outflow grim reaper unless only postpone it. No one had seen anything like it before and refusal long after it’s release, inspired a cult following and 6 sequels so far alongside more in pre-production and production!
Balance Plot and Characters
As a screenwriter of horror, you shall write with scrupulous attention to your plot equally as great as your characters. Withstand for example, Hannibal Lector, who was not merely an immoderate psychopathic murderer, but also charismatic, charming and witty. There is always a new release of some slasher flick like Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the interlopers in The Strangers, but charming villains that could outsmart even the strongest protagonist is timeless. Jodie Foster, on the opposing side, plays a social-klutz who lacks experience, embellish and confidence. Hier colleagues don’t respect her because she is a female working in a male-dominated field. The odds are against her, which makes Jodie House and Anthony Hopkins a frighteningly original duo. Stay gone from cliches in your characters and stay away from cliches in your plot –we already know what happens to the dumb blonde bombshell that runs away unrivaled to trip and fall.

Tight Plots
There are many subgenres when it comes to horror. In slasher-horror films facsimile Sleepaway Siege and April Fools Day there is usually very little plot moreover equally little character development compared to horror-thrillers like Hannibal, Se7en et cetera the original Japanese paraphrase of Ju-on: The Grudge. A good horror plot should be tightly woven, but not so abyss that the house feels lost and confused. Conversely, if there’s not suitable plot, then the audience will grow bored and your script will be thrown into the trash. In order to get the best understanding of your subgenre, watch movies including read books that are similar to the manuscript you are planning to write. Once you’ve got a better idea of your direction and how to execute the major plot points, you add your own unique plot twists, character quirks polysyndeton contrive your composition into something that is original and captivating.
Final Notes
The best way to make your horror screenplay primogenital is along focusing on the internal ampersand exteriority fears of your character. Is she a good mother? (Internal conflict.) Will the monsters get her daughter before she can rescue her? (External conflict.) Give your character a character that is easily identifiable, but also realistic with multiple dimensions. You beget hopes, fears, worries, dreams, fantasies, pet-peeves, quirks, hobbies and a atypical way of speaking than anyone else. You are an individual and there is no one else like you so your characters should exist unique too.
Plots should be tight and focused centrally around your protagonist. It should be strong and transpicuous to your audiences and propel your characters toward their goals. The events that happen to your character should never be random or coincidental. Therefore, your plot is idiosyncratic to your protagonist. It’s because of his or her actions that these events are unfolding. If you can replace your proponent with any other character, hence your plot and characters need to opheffen border tighter together. However, provided you remove your protagonist and your plot falls apart, then you are on the right track.
Originality is vital whereas it comes to writing a horror screenplay. In today’s Hollywood flush of ever unchanging and predictable slasher movies, seemingly endless sequels and poorly written remakes, an original horror movie script that breaks the walls of common horror films are the script that agents would kill for.
